Congratulations to ATB contributing editor Juan DeKruyff for winning the CATA Male Player of the year award last night at the CATA Awards Banquet. DeKruyff, who actually hasn't contributed anything lately to the ATB, had a solid year and is currently ranked #3 in the Men's 30's division and #7 in the Men's 40's division.
A well respected immigration attorney, DeKruyff spoke to ATB about the demands of balancing his tennis with his career and family life. "It's tough...I'm fighting 'the man' at work every day and raising two young kids with my wife, so I don't get to practice as much as I would like. Luckily, I have Topspin 4 on my Playstation 3." When asked about being dumped by his mixed doubles partner this year, DeKruyff took the high road. With his voice cracking slightly he stated "I'd rather not comment...on that...I'm moving forward and staying positive."

Congrats Juan !
Congrats!!! To my friend Juan! To every one Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!! From J Swords
Perhaps Juan's mixed partner was looking for of "single" partner. Nudge Nudge Wink Wink. If you know what I mean.
After criticizing Martha about her 5.0 schedule and getting dumped by his mixed partner, he gets Male Player of the Year. There are other top players in their age groups or categories who have contributed more to Austin area tennis who deserve this honor more than him.
I love you Juanny!!! Congrats.
Who would you have nominated there 12;46. Martha was wrong about the scheduling, which is why she changed it.
sounds like 12:46 is jealous. Juan is very deserving. J swords
Its not about jealousy J swords, it's about integrity to CATA's mission statement. Many other folks have selflessly giving more to area tennis than Juan. Maybe Juan should have won Most Popular? Happy Holidays
CATA's mission statement is to make monies.Ask the 500 or so champ kids that paid their 33 bucks this weekend, got rained out, keep them long enough so that no refund was given, did not reschedule the event, and no t shirt. Now that is integrity.
Congratulations Juan. One thing about a blog, any blog, less so here on ATB, someone a nice as Juan by someone that don't even want to sign their name to their bomb they threw into the room. Is it wrong to communicate the payers/players opinions of a particular issue to CATA. There are only three 5.0 captains and I'm pretty sure they would have added their input to any proposed change in advance, if asked.
The award was for male player of the year, it wasn't for service to tennis or volunteer of the year, they have other awards for those things.
Way to go Juan! This award of CATA Male Player of the Year is rightfully yours.
I can think of 4 guys who had better years. Wilks, Garza, Ereckson, and Bobba.
Wilks won just about every match he played, first at the 4.5 level, then at the 5.0 level, it didn’t matter. Helped his 5.0 team win sectionals. Won 2 events at the masters. He is a battler who is always tough to beat.
Garza went 7-1 in 5.0 doubles league play at sectionals and nationals. The one loss was in the national finals in a super tb (with Ereckson). Won open doubles at the masters. Sometimes he is average, but sometimes he is amazing.
Ereckson went 8-1 in 5.0 doubles league play at sectionals and nationals. The one loss was in the national finals in a super tb (with Garza). He is an excellent doubles player and a great ambassador to the game.
Bobba went 8-1 in 5.0 singles league play at sectionals and nationals. At sectionals played 3 singles matches in 2 days in the Dallas August heat; and at nationals played 6 singles matches in 3 days in the 100+ degree heat of the California desert. He is not human, just transistors and circuitry.
And btw, Andy Swanson’s wife won just about everything she played

I agree with the Bobba call on player of the year. The problem is that he is not in the Austin scene. I personally witnessed the National matches, and he played the finals with 35 minutes rest. He made one guy go puke in the bathroom, and then default.
I think the voting for player the player of the year should come from players, not CATA board members. On that note how can CATA board members also be working for the USTA. Hard to police yourselves.
Looks like someone is posing as the Blog Bookie. Will have to get my henchmen out to punish you.
Happy Holidays to the Austin tennis community. Wish you and your families a prosperous and tennis filled New Year! League season will be here before you know it. Blog Bookie has been on vacation for a few months but is back and will be posting on a regular basis.
