UT Ballkids Program

CALLING ALL FORMER LONGHORNS TENNIS BALL BOYS/GIRLS

First of all, I want to apologize for not getting to you sooner, but trying to follow-up on the awesome job the Garzas’ did for the past eight years was no easy task. The University of Texas Tennis Family is so grateful for their service to the program.

We want to let you know that the program will be organized by the Texas ACES student group. The ACES are the University of Texas students who not only run the scoreboards at our events, but also have begun to sell water and snacks at the matches. We have also had a few parents step forward to assist this group.

This will be the 9th season of the UT Men's Tennis Team Ball Boy/Girl Program. The coaches are always so thankful for your hard work and making this one of the only, if not the only ball kid program in the country.

The season has begun, but we still have the conference schedule before us. We will have a training session before the men’s match on Friday, March 30 at 4:30 p.m. We will go over some basics and get everybody ready for the rest of the season.

I'd like to hear back from each of you within the next few days letting me know if you are interested in participating in the program this year. Please reply to me with the kids’ names, ages, parents’ names and phone number.

Remember, you can work as many or as few matches as you can fit into your schedule. Also, don’t forget to tell your friends!

REMAINING HOME SCHEDULE

3/21 Women v. Illinois (2 pm) – no ball kids, but please come watch if you can

3/30 Women v. Kansas (2 pm) – again, no ball kids, but please come if you can

3/30 Men v. Oklahoma (6pm)

4/1 Women v. Kansas State (noon)

4/1 Men v. Oklahoma State (1 pm)

4/14 Women v. Baylor (11:30 am)

4/14 Men v. Texas A&M (6 pm)

4/15 Women v. Texas Tech (11:30 am)

Training:

The training will take place Friday, March 30 at 4:30, before the men’s match against Oklahoma. We may try to hold another one prior to the women’s match on Sunday.

Uniforms:

Everyone will be required to wear the white Longhorns Tennis Camp t-shirt or a white Texas Tennis shirt from last season, if you have one. The Tennis Team will be providing the camp t-shirts. The kids will be able to keep the shirts and can have them autographed by the UT players at the End-of-the-season Party.

Length of Each Match:It's hard to predict how long each match will last. The format is as follows: first there is a round of doubles (8-game pro sets) which last approximately 45 minutes; then there is about a 10-minute break followed by a round of singles (2 out of 3 sets) which take approximately 1.5 to 2 hours. During the break, all of the ball boys and girls eat a quick snack and get a drink. We will ask parent volunteers to bring snacks at a later date.

High School Boys and Girls:Unfortunately, high school boys cannot be ball boys for the UT Men’s Team and high school girls cannot be ball girls for the Women’s team. It is a possible NCAA recruiting violation to have potential recruits as ball boys/girls. That means that high school boys can only work the Women’s matches, and high school girls can only work the Men’s matches.

We look forward to hearing from you soon and Hook ‘em Horns!

ATB Interview: Andrew Marcus of Mytennislessons.com

ATB Note: I recently sat down with Andrew Marcus, who is the founder and CEO of Mytennislessons.com for a quick interview. Andrew is a recent graduate of the University of Connecticut and a new Austin resident.

ATB: Andrew, can you tell us a little about MyTennislessons.com ?

MyTennisLessons started out as DC Tennis Pros. At first it was just my excuse not to get a real job every summer when I came home from college, but it quickly turned into something much bigger. I would do my own advertising online and teach tennis to students all over the DC, Maryland, and Virginia metropolitan area. I quickly became overwhelmed by the amount of customers requesting lessons, so I decided to hire my friends to help take the load off my hands. From there I created a website, integrated scheduling software, and turned it into a legit business. Last summer I brought my college buddy and teammate from UConn, Jesse Silkoff, on board to help out with the increased demand. Last summer DC Tennis Pros provided 1200 lessons hiring over 20 instructors in the DC area alone. We decided to rebrand as MyTennisLessons.com and take our business model on a national scale.

MyTennisLessons is a website tennis players of all ages and skill levels visit to find a qualified tennis instructor in their area. Customers can easily select desired dates, times, and a conveniently located court location for their lesson. This is all easily done with efficient online scheduling d billing. We hire qualified tennis instructors in each area in order to provide our customers with a well rounded tennis teaching experience. Many of the coaches we hire have full time jobs or coaching positions at local tennis clubs. Often these instructors are looking to teach a few more hours a week if they could get customers on the side, and we give them the opportunity to do so. MyTennisLessons runs different advertising campaigns to fill our coaches open schedules and attract new and existing players to the game of tennis.

ATB: Can you tell us a little about your playing and teaching background ?

I grew up playing tennis in a suburb of DC called Potomac, MD. I competed in the juniors with the USTA for 7 years. In the 12 and under age group I was top 3 in the Mid-Atlantic. To this day, I tell everybody that I peaked at age 12. I won 2 State Doubles Championships for my High School in Maryland and went on to have a pretty successful junior career. I landed in freezing cold Storrs, Connecticut to play tennis for the Division 1 University of Connecticut Men's Team. While at UConn, I compiled a singles record of 61-43 and a doubles record of 64-40. I made the Big East Academic All Star team 4 years in a row and my senior year, I was awarded the Senior Scholar Athlete Award though the UConn athletic department. I have been teaching tennis for six years in DC and Austin. I have taught beginners as well highly advanced players. I especially enjoy coaching Junior tournament players, and watching them progress as players, because I can relate to what they are going through, being a former Junior myself.

ATB: You recently re-located here, why did you chose Austin ?

Over the summer Jesse and I recognized the need to bring on more team members to help us run the company on a national scale. We brought 3 other guys on board and ultimately chose Austin because we couldn't take another cold winter in the Northeast. Austin has an awesome entrepreneurial community, great resources at the University of Texas, a hip social scene, and a much lower cost of living for us recent college graduates. We hadn't heard a single bad thing about Austin until we came here. Apparently in the summertime the heat can become unbearable.

ATB: What advice would you give to someone who is interested in hiring a tennis instructor ?

A lot of different factors go into selecting an instructor. You want to make sure you choose one that will be right for you and your game. First and foremost you want a reliable instructor you can easily contact and trust to be on time. it’s also more enjoyable working with an instructor who is not only personable, but also capable of taking your game to the next level. Experienced instructors are capable of assessing ones skill level, and therefore properly evaluating and adjusting ones strokes and overall game play. I think the most important thing is to enjoy yourself on the court and have an instructor you can easily talk to, not only about tennis, but about everyday life.

ATB: How do you see mytennislessons.com fitting into the Austin Tennis scene ?

MyTennisLessons has hired over 50 tennis instructors nationwide since we landed here in Austin a couple months ago. We revamped our website, created a user friendly scheduling system, and have a presence in 10 new markets. I see MyTennisLessons helping to expand the current Austin tennis scene. Many people want to get involved with tennis but don't know the best way to find an instructor in their area, especially if they're beginners. There are a lot of opportunities to join leagues and interact with established players, but beginners aren't sure where to find lessons to get initially introduced to the game. Often when someone is looking for a convenient and affordable alternative, they simply go to Google and type in "Tennis Lessons". Fortunately we have developed to our website to the point where our website shows up on the first or second page in multiple cities. We hope to work with some local tennis clubs as well in order to help fill tennis lessons, camps, and clinics. Tennis is one of the fastest growing sports in America and we aim to help manage the growing demand for tennis not only Austin, but also nationally.

ATB at Indian Wells

Just a quick note about my trip to the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells as I have had a lot of people ask about it. If you haven't made it out there and you enjoy watching professional tennis live, it's definitely worth the trip. As far getting there, we flew into Los Angeles and rented a car, I know some folks fly into San Diego as well. There is a whole range of lodging available, depending on your budget. We stayed at the Westin Mission Hills Resort, which was pretty nice and not terribly expensive.

The tickets aren't cheap, about $40 for nosebleed seats in the main stadium. If you want to see the big names play, you'll end up in the main stadium, I caught a couple of Federer matches and saw Djokovic play once. The view is pretty good, but I much prefer to get up close at one of the side courts. The best match I saw during the three sessions I attended was a doubles match between Andy and Jaime Murray and Daniel Nestor and Max Mirnyi. As far as the women's matches, I got to see Christina McHale upset Kvitova on a side court, which was also great. If you go during the day, make sure to take a hat, water, and some sunscreen as the desert sun can be relentless.

One thing I really liked was the way the whole area seemed to be into the event. Every restaurant was showing the matches on their television sets and the TV and newspaper coverage was very good. Of course, the players are all over the place, which is fun for the fans. The picture above was taken at the top of the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway. I was there with my kids and Djokovic walked by with some friends. I offered to take a picture for him with his group and he graciously agreed to also take a picture with my boys.

USTA 30 Nationals Winners

Congratulations to the following players for winning their respective divisions at the 30's Nationals:

Men's Singles: Robert Collins
Women's Singles: Elizabeth Selverling
Men's Doubles: Joe Morris and David Corrie
Women's Doubles: Alison Ojeda and Kaysie Smashey
Mixed Doubles: Robert Kowalcyzk and Katerina Stanford

I was not able to see any of the matches but I wanted to re-publish on of the comments that was left in a previous thread:

Robert Collins and David Corrie played a great match but Corrie ran out of gas in the third set with Collins winning the singles event. Corrie and his partner Joe Morris then won the doubles title in three tough sets over Thomas Wride and Duncan Howell of Memphis. Great tennis over the last four days at Westwood.

UT Men's and Women's Updates

The UT Men's team dropped a 4-1 decision to The University of San Diego on Friday, in a match that was moved to Houston due to weather conditions. To read more about the match, please click here. One bright spot for UT was the strong play of Ben Chen who is now 3-0 since his return from injury. The Longhorns won't have much time to dwell on the loss, as they are taking on Florida State in Houston today at 5pm.

On Tuesday, the UT Men take on the top ranked University of Virginia Men at Penick Allison at 6pm. Led by seniors Steve Johnson and Daniel Nguyen, the Trojans have been on a roll and are coming off a 6-1 win over UCLA and a 7-0 shut out of Virgina Tech. Hopefully there will be a big crowd out for that one, and the weather will clear up a little.

The UT Women's team was slated to play SMU today, but that match was canceled. They are scheduled to play Michigan on Sunday, March 11, at 11am and USC on Wednesday, March 14, at Noon. Check out Texassports.com for weather updates.

USTA 30's Nationals Draws Posted

The draws for the USTA National 30's Hardcourt Championships, which will be played at Westwood Country Club starting on Saturday, have been posted. The Men's singles draw has 25 players entered, while the Women's draw has six players. Austin area residents in the men's singles draw include Christo Van Rensberg (3), David Corrie (2), Joe Morris (5), Tony Franco, Chad Case, John Swords, and Michael Lane. Looking at the draw, there could be an interesting quarterfinal matchup between Austin residents Joe Morris and Christo Van Rensberg, assuming they both win their round of 16 matches. In the doubles draw, Chris Haggard and Michale Lane are unseeded and will face the #3 seeded team of Duncan Howell and Thomas Wride on Monday at 2pm in the quarterfinals. Given that Haggard is still capable of winning Futures level tournaments, that should be a close match. Also look for Rick Garza and Anders Eriksson to have a good match against Brian Notis and Darin Pleasant in the quarters. The Women's draw is missing perennial favorite Julie Cass this year, and there are no local players in the Women's singles or Women's doubles draws.

I will be in Indian Wells for Spring Break, so if anyone wants to update the tournament results, please send your reports to atatu2005@yahoo.com.
